Walt Disney World can feel overwhelming — hundreds of rides, restaurants, and resort options across four massive parks. After dozens of trips with my family, I've distilled what actually works into the tips below.
Book Dining and Lightning Lane Early
Disney dining reservations open 60 days before your trip. Popular character meals like Cinderella's Royal Table and Be Our Guest fill up the same morning they open — set an alarm and book at exactly 6 a.m. ET. Individual Lightning Lane selections for top-tier rides like TRON and Guardians of the Galaxy open at 7 a.m. on your park day.
Use a Crowd Calendar
Not all weeks at Disney are equal. Late January, early September, and the week after Thanksgiving tend to be the least crowded times of year. Avoid holiday weeks, spring break (mid-March through mid-April), and the week between Christmas and New Year's if wait times matter to you.
Rope Drop is Worth the Early Wake-Up
Being at the park gates 30–45 minutes before official opening is the single best way to ride top attractions with minimal wait. The first 90 minutes after a park opens are typically the shortest waits of the entire day — especially for Magic Kingdom headliners like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle Run.
Pack Smart for Park Days
Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable — you'll average 8–12 miles per day. A small backpack with a portable charger, a refillable water bottle (free ice water is available at any quick-service counter), sunscreen, and a light rain poncho covers 90% of situations. For families with kids, a compact stroller is welcome in all four parks.
Stay On-Site If Your Budget Allows
Disney resort guests get 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry every day — a real advantage for hitting the most popular rides before the crowds build. On-site hotels also offer free transportation to all parks via bus, monorail, or gondola, which eliminates parking costs and a lot of stress.

Dining at Walt Disney World is an experience in itself — from quick bites in the park to immersive table-service meals and magical character breakfasts. Here are my honest takes on some of the most popular spots.
Cinderella's Royal Table — ★★★★★
This is the crown jewel of WDW character dining. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served inside Cinderella Castle with appearances by Disney Princesses. The food is genuinely good (the filet is excellent at dinner), but you're really paying for the setting and the magical photos. Book the moment your 60-day window opens — it sells out every single day.
Topolino's Terrace — ★★★★★
The character breakfast at the rooftop restaurant of Disney's Riviera Resort is my favorite hidden gem. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy appear in their artist-inspired outfits. The food — avocado toast, quiche, pastries — is genuinely brunch-quality, and the views of EPCOT are stunning. Much easier to book than Cinderella's Royal Table.
Be Our Guest Restaurant — ★★★★☆
Lunch at Be Our Guest is a quick-service meal inside the Beast's enchanted castle — the atmosphere alone earns four stars. Dinner converts to a prix-fixe table service with cast members in costume. The French onion soup and the grey stuff dessert are musts. Worth booking for the theming even if you're not a huge Beauty and the Beast fan.
Dole Whip at Aloha Isle — ★★★★★
No WDW trip is complete without a Dole Whip. The pineapple soft-serve at Aloha Isle in Adventureland is as good as advertised — refreshing, light, and perfectly tart. Get the float with pineapple juice. The line moves faster than it looks, and it's absolutely worth it.
Satu'li Canteen (Pandora) — ★★★★☆
The best quick-service meal in all of Walt Disney World, in my opinion. The grain bowls with your choice of protein (I love the slow-roasted Ronkiu with chili sauce) are fresh, filling, and genuinely delicious. The unique menu and stunning Pandora setting make this a must-do even if you skip the quick-service lines elsewhere.
Disney Outfit Ideas
Dressing for Disney is one of my favorite parts of trip planning. The goal is outfits that feel magical and photo-worthy without sacrificing comfort on a 10-mile walking day. Here's how I put together looks for myself and my family.
Comfort Comes First
Athletic dresses and skorts are my go-to for park days — they're cute in photos but practical when you're chasing kids or hopping on rides. Brands like All In Motion (Target), Fabletics, and Old Navy active lines hit the sweet spot of affordable, comfortable, and Disney-appropriate.
Coordinate, Don't Match
Coordinating family outfits look much more natural in photos than identical matching sets. I like to pick one color palette (say, pink and white) and let everyone wear their own variation. A toddler in a princess tutu, a tween in a pleated athletic skirt, and mom in a floral dress — all in the same color family — looks polished without being costume-y.
Subtle Disney Theming Photographs Best
A Mickey ear headband, a small embroidered detail, or a character-print accessory is usually more versatile than a full costume. That said, Bounding (dressing inspired by a character without wearing the actual costume) is hugely popular at Disney and can look absolutely stunning in front of matching backdrops in the parks.
Shoes Are the Most Important Decision
Do not wear new shoes to Disney. Whatever shoes you choose — Adidas Sambas, On Clouds, white sneakers — wear them for at least a few weeks before your trip. Blisters on day one can ruin the whole vacation. I also keep a pair of foldable flats in my park bag for the ride home.
